Tips on choosing your wedding bouquet

Wedding Flowers were introduced in the Roman times and symbolised the start of something new. However, wedding bouquets in comparison are a relatively new addition to wedding traditions and weren’t introduced until the Victorian era! The bridal bouquet is a pretty important part of any wedding day and is present at all the important parts of the day, taking centre stage with the Bride & Groom…. so rightfully, it needs to look just amazing! Here are some top tips to ensure your bridal bouquet looks as fantastic as you….

    1. Ideally find your wedding dress or be certain of the style of dress that you want before choosing your bridal flowers! A large luscious cascading bouquet will overpower a delicate fitted dress and a smaller bouquet will look out of proportion with a large ball gown style dress. The bouquet should compliment your dress and your body size, so try to bare this in mind. If at all possible (and done sneakily so your husband to be doesn’t see), provide your florist with a picture of your dress when you meet!

    2. Think about the flower colour palette and how that looks next to your dress.
For example, some varieties of white rose, will look yellow next to an ivory dress. Making sure your florist is aware of your dress colour will help to ensure the colours compliment the dress.

    3. Your florist will ask you what shape and style bouquet you would like. There are lots of different shapes & styles of bouquet, including: round, hand-tied, cascading and asymmetrical. Some Brides like tight, flower only bouquets, which often suit more traditional styles. Whilst, others like a looser, more unstructured styles with “dancer” flowers, which often works well with boho/ whimsical wedding vibes.

    4. Choose a bouquet size that you’re comfortable holding for long periods of time…. After several hours of holding your bouquet through the ceremony, photographs and into the wedding breakfast, your beautiful bouquet can start to feel quite heavy! If you’re quite petite, it’s usually recommended that whatever style you have, is scaled to your size, so you don’t feel like you’re going to be squashed under a mountain of flowers on your big day!!!

    5. If you’re insistent on wanting Peonies in your wedding bouquet, please, please…pretty please, choose a May wedding date!!!! Yes, of course flowers can be found out of season, but they can be little divas! They’re often highly unpredictable and generally of poorer quality. Your florist has no way of knowing what the state of your out of season flowers will be, until a few days before your wedding, by which point, it may be impossible to get replacements!
My point is…. choose flowers that are seasonal! You’re wedding florist will thank you, you will thank yourself and it saves you a lot of money and stress!

    6. Be careful of having only two highly contrasting colours in your bouquet… for example white & burgundy!
Whilst white & burgundy are beautiful, you may want to consider incorporating a few different tones or colours in-between these two, to soften the contrast. For example, different tones of pink. Not only will this tie the two colours together and give a more natural colour gradient, that’s pleasing to the eye, but it will help to prevent the dark burgundy flowers from looking like giant dark holes in the bouquet on your wedding photos!

Colour Pallet
    1. Bridal bouquets don’t have to have just fresh flowers & foliage!
The addition of dried elements, such as, pampas grass, bunny tails & seed pods can be beautiful! A little bit more out there… why not consider berries, fruits or even feathers for a truly unique bridal bouquet!
